A little history, I have a good sized music / photo collection that I like to stream to my home theater system via a PS3. Traditionally I used Windows Media Player via Windows to stream media. Not wanting to have a PC on all the time, I upgraded to a WD MyBook World home NAS network harddrive to accomplish the same task. This device was less than stellar in most aspects, but it (kind of) worked...that is until it died recently (after only a year or so). That is when I embarked on my quest to replace my NAS / router with one of the new breed of routers that supports USB storage and media serving. I went through several routers, all of which supposedly supported DNLA media serving, but all failing to serve all my media files (most devices ran out of memory once they indexed so many files and would either freeze or simply just server up a small fraction of my file). Not only that, their read/write performance on my external, NTFS formatted, portable HD were terrible.
Flash forward to today when I received my Asus router. After getting everything setup and upgrading to the latest firmware (1.04m) I crossed my fingers and plugged in the HD. After about 30 minutes or so it had finished indexing the media on the HD. I fired up my PS3 and there was all my media! Not only that, but it serves up the files very quickly! I can browse through 12 megapixel photos instantly. All my music and videos were there and played flawlessly. One nice feature is that you can browse by "folder" when accessing any media type (at least on the PS3). All media servers need to have this method of browsing, but sadly many do not. Performing the same functions on the MyBook were agonizingly slow. It also took my MyBook several hours just to index my collection. To say I am impressed is an understatement!
You can also access your connected drive via a standard SMB share (\\router ip address), making it easy to copy and manage your files. Write performance was about 5MB/sec on the NTFS drive, which was about 4x the performance of other routers.
This is a great router for file / media sharing and I highly recommend it for that purpose!
The only cons I have so far is that the stats pages don't show the signal strength of attached wireless clients (at least as far as I can tell) and it does not support IPv6 (although that is not needed today). I have only had it setup for a few hours, but so far it is the best home router and media serving device I have used. I will update the review if I have any issues / problems in the future.
UPDATE 7/7/2011:
After having this router for 24 hours, I have run in to some issues...
First off, like others have mentioned, with the default settings various VPNs will not work. I use a Cisco IPSec VPN for work. To resolve this, simply go to the DMZ tab and enable the various VPN pass-through options. Also, if you are using a wired connection with a VPN then you will have problems with the hardware NAT function on the device. Simply enable the QOS feature and this will automagically disable the hardware NAT. My VPN works fine once I made these setting changes (firmware 1.0.1.4m)
I also use a D-Link DAP 1522 wireless bridge to connect my upstairs PC and VOIP phone to the router. The ASUS doesn't seem to link the bridge. While my phone works fine, my PC has some issues with local networking. I can access the internet fine on the PC (good), but cannot access some local resources such as the router itself or clients connected to the router. What is weird is that if I reboot to bridge, I can access local resources for a few minutes (at most) and then they disappear. ASUS tech support, if you are listening, do you have any ideas? (This bridge has worked flawlessly with the last two routers it was paired with).
My home network consists of mostly wireless devices. The only hard wired devices are a desktop PC which is barely used and a network printer. Between my wife and I there are up to 10 devices using WiFi in the house, of which 4 or so are usually always connected; iPad, iPhone, 2 laptops.
My last router seemed to do fine, but I was noticing things that were popping up once in a while. I work from home a lot, and VPN into work. All of a sudden after a few months the router (G only), started to disconnect my VPN connection once in a while, my VOIP phone started to have random noises while on calls, my xbox live connection would do random drops and really lag, and some issues with iTunes store connections. It ended up being all the router's fault.
So, moving on to the ASUS router; one word to describe is amazing! It's only been about half a week, but, all my issues have been resolved. If you read most of the reviews they rave about the speed of this router, and it's no joke! Not only are my speedtest.net tests faster both upload and download, my latency is way down, my web pages load MUCH faster, Netflix is twice as fast on my xbox (with no drops or timeouts for buffering and checking best quality connection), my VPN connections doesn't suffer drops, phone is much clearer, and xbox live is performing superbly.
Next; setup. As many have reviewed, this is quite possibly the easiest setup on a router ever. I didn't run the CD, I went straight to the web setup, but and wow, 2 thumbs up Asus! I can't believe it took 20years for a company to come up with an easy interface for a home router. Super easy, sidebar explains every option, I was up in literally less than 5minutes. Speaking of fast and easy, unlike majority of routers out there, when you make a change, it is FAST! Even is a reboot of the router is required, it's very fast.
What I love about this router is the dual simultaneous band feature. While the 5Ghz doesn't go quite as far as the 2.4Ghz G signal, I like that I can separate my devices onto both. With the 5Ghz I connect to the router at up to 300Mb, which is nice for streaming and such. I also connect my work laptop at 5Ghz since my 2.4Ghz phone is always next to me for conference calls (even though the phone is the kind that should not interfere, I still like this option). My G devices all connect at up to 150Mb, which is awesome again, most for streaming and such.
The distance. I keep my router in a spare room hidden away behind a couch. I live in a bilevel, and this router projects the signal farther than any router I ever owned. My previous trendnet router had a really hard time reaching my xbox downstairs on the other end of the house. My XBOX displayed a 1 bar signal, and with the Asus I get a full 4 bar signal! No more lagging or XBOX live issues, and best of all, no more need for me to run a hard wire to it!
Looks: For those who care, this is a really sleek and nice looking router. You would think that such a slim and pretty router could not perform well, but it sure does. I typically think big and bulky would give a better signal, but that sure is not the case. Kudos Asus, nice job again!
Overall, GREAT router, do not cheap out on lesser models because you will regret it. So far I have no cons for this router, only pros.
Oh yes, one thing, for those of you who VPN into work, you need to go into the setting and enable it!

This product is ideal if you want to connect printer or hard drives to you local network with its two USB slots. The dual band functionality works nicely: The 5Ghz band is a mega workhorse!
User interface is easy to use for anyone which makes this router a breeze to set up. You can create multiple network easily, which is great for a home office and assign clients to a specific network. You can also prioritize internet use depending on what you do which is really convenient if people in your household do gaming online or streaming a lot
Any product in direct competition will be either much more expensive (Netgear, or Cisco/Linksys) or will not offer as much possibilities and features (TP or Dlink)
The only thing I don't quite like about it and that probably cause I had a Cisco E4200 before and I'm super picky, is that it maxes out at 600 Mbps while the Cisco did max out at 900 Mbps... But really if you require that much fire power...
