Let me put this out there, I use these mainly for listening to audiobooks. I do not use these for music very often, but when I have, they have sounded very good. Not too much bass as others have said. I really do think that these are good for almost all stuff. I have listened to instrumental (digital variety), to real classical, to Rob Zombie and the RHCP's. I think that it all sounds pretty good. I think that they hit all the ranges in a complete blend, there is not one sound that sticks out more than the other. This could just be my ears though as others have said "too much bass."
They have a relatively large body when compared with other newer in ear headphones but are not too heavy. The foam tips are not a standard design that can be replaced with normal silicon tips the way Skullcandys or JBuds or lots of others can. This is about the only negative thing I can find about these headphones. I got used to the silicon from my cheapo skullcandys. I like the foam but since it is not a standard size you either will have to replace the tips by purchasing more or just buying new headphones when they get destroyed beyond use. The tips may last a while but I feel like they are gonna get 'bad' after a few months of use (I am at about 1 month, but I use them 3-5 days a week). I also bought another set of headphones at the same time and these are my choice for everyday use. The others have been relegated to back up duty in case these unexpectedly break or I leave them at home on accident.
Since I made the overt comparison, the other came in an electric blue color w/ a free case. They were priced similarly so I think it is fair to compare them. Lets just say the others are not bad but they are a spare set for a reason. Also since I mentioned Skullcandy as well, these Koss The Plug sound better than the 3 Ink'd pairs and probably better than the Titans (older model Titans w/ no inline Vol control...it has been about a year since they broke, but in turn the Titans sounded much much better than the first pair of Ink'd I had and moderately better than the second set). The 3'rd set of Ink'd were purchased for use while these Koss were shipped otherwise I would not have bought them again.
Overall I would give these a 4.5 outta 5. But a 5 for the Amazon review since no halves. I think that the wire which is thin (surprisingly little cord noise or maybe it is just easier to tune out than the 'backups') will most likely break at some point. Also the idea of replacement tips detracts a little, but for the price in my opinion these are by far better than the $25-60ish retail price for the Skullcandys I have tried and the $50 MSRP of the spare electric blue set sold on Amazon.
Also I did not just opt for these because they were cheap, people mentioned that they were some of the best sub 100 headphones you could get. And I was looking in the 50-100 range but just didnt feel the value was good enough to justify the purchase price. If I am gonna have crazy cord noise and broken wires and faulty speakers why not 'risk it' with these.
I prefer the foam plugs of these which for me fit more securely & comfortably than plastic or silicone tips that slide out, fall out, don't maintain a seal & it gets very annoying to repeatedly adjust them in the ear canal & to constantly clean them of greasy ear wax (eww). Wax collects on the foam too but requires less frequent wiping with a soft towel (I use microfiber or tissue) & comes with replacement foam tips that can be switched out (I don't usually need to, so I've collected several extra pairs over the yrs, not to mention the foam tips aren't always as easy to replace as you'd expect, so I avoid doing it unless necessary).
With good care & regular cleaning these last with frequent use for at least 1 maybe 2 years, longer if not used daily. Usually what would break on me is one ear bud (either the wire in the casing or the sound tube holding the foam would break off completely - bye bye, music), but only with rough use, usually if I wear them often in bed for sleep (which I've stopped doing). Pillows & these don't get along too well, unless my head is propped up higher with an extra cushion. Excellent sound quality for hooking up to TV - brings out every unnoticed background sound (birds, traffic, etc) which I love, & enhances inaudible whispers otherwise missed (& often omitted from subtitles).
I have to say I used to love the rubber surface of the cord (it's soft, smooth, doesn't kink & doesn't create friction noise) but ever since getting my current touch-activated phone the rubber cord can actually acts as a stylus and whenever it touches the screen (which happens constantly during use) my phone responds like I'm touching it & all sorts of irritating functions & apps are activated (& accidental changes made! Not good). Nuisance! (not the earphones, it's touchscreen phones that I hate). The struggle to keep the cord from touching the screen is a constant burden & frequently a failure. Oh well. I think not all phone brands are touch activated to use, but LG phones are. It's a very good but also highly annoying feature.
I still love & prefer these earphones for the quality of bass they give. I've paid as much as $50 for (used) Klipsch earphones that were good quality & incredibly durable (took 5 yrs of gym abuse before they broke) but I didn't like those better than these. I wouldn't dream of spending $250+ for Bose or Beats or Dyson or whatever high-end brand, only to probably lose them after the insane investment (story of my life). I'm happy in my relationship with Koss The Plug as long as they don't change quality or discontinue manufacture (another story of my life).
